Tell your volume manager to run as-submit -u $UDI when an iPod is connected. Plug in your iPod. Click 'submit' when asked. Check your last.fm profile and see your iPod plays. Or, you can run it in a console and it will automagically find your iPod.
Note: not being developed any more, last.fm lost my support due to their stupid pay-for-radio trick (that's why I didn't bother to put a deb in my PPA); feel free to branch and hack away, however, if it scratches your particular itch; I'll advertise your branch here and/or mark it as trunk ;)
Requirements:
* libgpod with python support
* dbus python bindings
* Hal
* libnotify python bindings
* pyGTK
tested on a gen. 6 iPod Classic, in theory it should support whatever looks and handles like an iPod
