Somnium Linux is an Arch Linux-based distribution using a combination of individual, standalone components to provide a desktop environment. Geared more towards general purpose usage than command-line experts, Somnium Linux aims to take its first steps in the right direction – towards being the desktop Linux should’ve always been.
A Plethora of Apps
Being based on Arch, all apps from the official repositories and AUR can be found ready to install, along with some custom sources adding a boatload of software to the range. Applications you want can be installed via a simple, easily remembered command. A GUI for browsing the “App Store” of sorts is being worked on.
User-friendly, non-geeky interfaces
Designed and configured with familiarity with existing OSs in mind, it provides an intuitive, easy-to-use desktop. Most settings can be configured from a central location, and finding any installed app is just a click away. Indeed user-friendly. And it’s not very choosy about who its friends are either.
Super-fast, Snappy Desktop – With the Bling-Bling Too
Who says Linux is all ugly grey windows or black screen with a blinking cursor? Long gone are the days of the Windows 95 look – dark and beautiful GTK themes with custom window border themes reduce eye strain, while giving you a beautiful desktop that you can fine tune to the smallest detail to even make your own theme. Don’t like the default ones? Don’t want to make one? Download ready-made theme packs for the system interfaces and window borders
Handy Accessories
Superb accessories for task automation, automatic folder organization, to-do lists accessibility, etc.
Gaming on Linux
With the release of Steam for Linux and popular games now becoming Linux-exclusive as planned by Valve, gaming on Linux has gained a strong foothold in seeing a new dawn. By default, Somnium ships with the Steam Client, Desura Client, and the Humble Indie Bundle. The full gaming potential of your machine can be unleashed by simply clicking ‘Enable drivers’ in the ‘Additional Drivers’ menu.
You’ve Still Got Your Office!
Get a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation creator, PDF reader. Who says Linux can’t be used in for your school project?
Under The Hood
Here is where the difference comes in. The already powerful Arch infrastructure is pushed further by fine-tuned configuration. A Linux kernel modified for increased system responsiveness along with many tweaks and optimizations done by default (with walkthroughs for per-system tweaks in the Wiki) take performance to a whole new level.
Super-charged, streamlined update system
Staying up-to-date couldn’t have been easier. A simple GUI for safely upgrading all installed packages to the latest version with the click of a button is available, while the command line method is even faster and more powerful – if you’re willing to learn this rather simple (maybe simpler) way.
The latest software made available – as soon as it’s ready
New packages/upgrades are transferred to the stable repo as soon as they are tested and considered stable, rather than when Ubuntu decides to update their repos, which takes place months after the update/application has been released. So you don’t have to wait with an outdated system with frozen packages for the next new ISO/OS release to get updated repositories. If you regularly update your system, you’re always running bleeding edge software – and bleeding edge doesn’t mean instability and regular breakage either.
Intel i686 Optimized
For 32-bit systems, performance excels on the new-generation Intel® CPUs.
Try it Live, or Install Alongside Your existing OS
Just boot the computer from the LiveCD/USB to try Somnium without installing it! Like it? Install it as your primary OS or dual-boot/
Best of all, it costs nothing. Literally.
No, seriously. You can download and install it totally free of cost. And you don’t have to call up and pay the tech-support should any problems arise. Just head over to the forums, and all in power will be done to fix the issue for you.
Want something even more special? Get your very own custom-built edition!
You can get your own purpose-built Somnium spin, may it be exclusively for gaming, multimedia editing, home theatre, CAD, or whatever – all just for a very small fee/donation.
Why a fee for a free, GNU-licensed software? To keep the project alive and to avoid adding more ads and eventually reducing/removing ads altogether.
===YOUR CONTRIBUTION===
What can you do to help us?
1) Developers: You can join our development team, more specifically, our debugging team, once the Alpha is released.
2) Testers: Given the infinite possible configurations, it is not possible for us to hunt and fix every possible bug. Hence we need as many testers as possible. Your experience feedback and bug reports will be used for the betterment of the project.
3) Partners, Sponsors, and dear Users: As the project grows further, larger things will be born, and sustaining them would become very difficult without the necessary backing, most importantly the lack of finances without which many projects are stalled or even entirely dropped For that we need collaboration partners and sponsors. Also, what's an OS without users? :)
