Kunquat 0.5.3 is a cleanup release that strives for a sensible user experience. We removed some placeholder buttons from the toolbar, fixed the save button, and decided to always clear tracker state on exit. It should be possible to open saved composition files with the tracker by defining a filename on the command line when the tracker is started. The note placement grid was fine-tuned for a compact layout with a smooth texture. We also removed some obsolete unit tests.

Kunquat 0.5.2 adds a visual grid together with a snap-to-grid feature that makes it faster to move around the composition and place evenly spaced notes. The horizontal cursors is now visible at all times, making it easier to understand what is happening. An empty box shape is used when the cursor is not on top of any previously inserted instructions. We also fixed some bugs preventing certain modifications on composition data.

This release is about dynamic reaction configurations and inter-application communication. We got rid of the global column and introduced infinite playback mode. Kunquat 0.4.2 is out with a revised user interface that provides rudimentary access to most of the important properties of Kunquat compositions, instruments, generators and signal processors. The release introduces effects, which combine one or several DSP units in a single module. The release also introduces an additive synthesis generator, which is suitable for modelling a number of different instruments in a memory-efficient way. We changed the compositions to use portable deterministic pseudorandom number generation. Kunquat instruments were modified and may optionally produce sound that is not related to a specific fundamental note.

This release of Kunquat features a graphical user interface for editing Kunquat compositions. As a result of the user interface development, the Kunquat library also got many fixes and additions.

The GUI contains the necessary controls for modifying pattern data and the order in which they are played. Other basic functionality includes importing/exporting of Kunquat compositions and simple undo/redo functionality. For the time being, we have kept the instrument editor very minimal and the DSP configurator is missing altogether. We will implement these after major changes in the format that we will focus on in the next release.

The release of Kunquat 0.3.2 is packed with many improvements over previous versions. The new release ships with reverb and volume scaling, which are the first effects utilizing our new support for DSP effects. A flexible graph structure is provided for routing audio data, allowing DSP effects both inside instruments and for compositions. We now have better support for the kind of generators and DSP effects that benefit from allocating internal buffers based on mixing rate used for playback. This release of Kunquat provides a foreign language interface for Python applications. The release also includes a complete rewrite of kunquat-player in Python. Finally, the C library contains important fixes and additions.

The Python interface provides a straightforward access to Kunquat compositions through Python. The Python API provides all the important functionality of the C API in a way that makes sense in Python. With a suitable audio interface, it is possible to write a simple Kunquat player in less than ten lines of Python code. The rewritten version of kunquat-player provides almost all of the functionality of the old C implementation.

The Kunquat 0.2.4 release introduces an editor API in C language. The API is more powerful than it looks at first glance. Behind the scenes, we have a state store that helps editor applications retain the composition state over software crashes. The new release also fixes some minor bugs present in previous releases. Finally, 0.2.4 is the first release where copyrights are waived with a CC0 waiver instead of simply granting users a GPL license to the software.

The new C editor API can be used to modify Kunquat compositions, but the API is still slightly incomplete. 0.2.2 (player) release from the 0.2 series released

Release notes:

This is the first Kunquat release that separates the code base into applications and a dynamically linked library. Whereas our previous release introduced the separation into a library and applications we kept building the library statically into the applications.

The demo application is gone. Instead Kunquat 0.2.2 ships with two real applications, kunquat-player and kunquat-export, and some example files that should appear into example/ directory after the source code has been built. You can experiment with the test file example.kqt.bz2 and the new applications. You may use kunquat-player to play the composition trough your sound card, or kunquat-export for exporting it into an ordinary wav-file.
