GNU binutils work mostly behind the scenes of Linux development, largely because GNU make and the GCC frontend does so many things automatically.

The binutils are concerned with the creation and manipulation of binary object files. They include assembler compilers, library stripping and linking functionality as well as tools to extract useful information from such object files.

Utilities include: ld as nm objdump objcopy nm ar ranlib strip c filt size addr2line and dlltool.
