Bug Description

Problem at hand :
Alsa driver intel_hd on feisty kernels 2.6.20-11/12 recognize the sound card and possible the correct codec but no audio is heard via speakers. All volumes are turned up to 100% and unmuted. gnome volume controls are all active as well as alsamixer. the card is identified as HDA Intel / Realtek ALC861VD "oss".

a few quirks though:
ubuntu feisty herd 5 2.6.20-9/10* kernel works fine**. The card is HDA Intel/ Realteck ID 862 "oss" and plays audio fine.

*2.6.20-10 sound volume is about half of what is able in 2.6.20-9 but it works
**problem is there is no headphone selection for the device

Steps to reproduce
Boot into any 2.6.10-11+ update kernel.

it is on a toshiba a134 series laptop.
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

any more information needed please ask

This is some information on the 2.6.20-12

the toshiba and acers with the core duos are actually very similar. you may also be having problems with your sd reader as well. but thats a whole other ball game. I am coming to Ubuntu from 5 years of gentoo. its a nice change but i feel like a fish out of water a little since i never seriously started using another distro. ubuntu is nice though. I am trying my best not to build my own kernel and do alsa myself but i just want to keep ubuntu clean.

Just a note, I have a Toshiba A135 laptop. I just upgraded to Ubuntu 7.04. After rebooting from the upgrade I lost sound. Previously I would only lose sound when I suspended the system. After the upgrade there was no sound. I used the above solution:

edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base and add "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack"

Now I have sound. The volume isn't that great but good enough to work with.

I also experienced this with my Toshiba A100-TA7 with Ubuntu 7.04 (final release)

With Edgy, I never experienced any problems with sound. Whether I rebooted/suspended or not, it always worked.

echo "options snd-hda-intel model=3stack" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
and a reboot fixed the problem for me.

I've got a very similar problem with my Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Xi1526.

The soundcard is Intel-hda with Realtek ALC880.

On Edgy I have the problem that speakers and headphonejack were switched (see BUG 71737).
Now after upgrading to feisty there was no sound at all.

After adding mode=3stack to /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base sound works, but only with the headphone jack - the speakers are dead!

I want to try out different modes today (5stack, w810 etc.). But if you got any other idea what could be wrong please let me know!

well 3stack did not work with stock ubuntu alsa. compiled my own libs utils and driver and still did not work just modprobing.. tried stack3 with the self compiled alsa works fine now. and volume is a bit low. kind as if it was set at 80% volume. but oh well. headphone jack still does not mute speakers when plugging into it.. switch works fine as for turning the jack off but does not disable the internal speakers. read somewhere a bit back about a patch for that.. but requires self compile of the kernel of course. new alsa versions my have it included now. Just as phil has written i am in ukraine till the coming winter and its a pain to get my laptop online. god i miss america...

Hi!

I have the same problem. The laptop is a Toshiba Dynabook AX/53C. Here are the details of the sound card:

lspci | grep -i high
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller (rev 02)

 cat /proc/asound/card0/codec\#* | grep -i codec
Codec: Realtek ID 268

Please let me know should you need any further details.

Sorry, I should have done more research... There is another Bug logged (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.22/+bug/116326) and the fix in there solved my sound problems.

You may want to check it out, it requires some compiling but it is quite straightforward (I could do it and I'm *very* rusty),

Greetings Mick

Guys,

This is how I've fixed my Thinkpad T60p. My laptop didn't have sound at all.

sudo apt-get install build-essential ncurses-dev gettext
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r`
cd /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22-14-generic
sudo mkdir alsa

Now download the latest drivers from http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Main_Page

sudo tar xf alsa-driver-1.0.15.tar.bz2
sudo tar xf alsa-lib-1.0.15.tar.bz2
sudo tar xf alsa-utils-1.0.15.tar.bz2

cd alsa-driver-1.0.15/
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install

- repeat the same step fro alsa-lib and alsa-utils

then

sudo depmod -a

and

reboot

My Intel Card start working. Listed below its the card from my system:
