Sed, the GNU Stream Editor, copies the named files (standard input default) to the standard output, edited according to a script of commands.
Sed allows you to edit files in a script like fashion, and can be inserted in a pipeline of commands. So, for example, you might want to find all files with a specific occurring string, and then edit them in place to alter that string to something different. Sed is designed for just such applications.
