I am the upstream developer of some small programs (including the Algorithms package for LaTeX, and avr-evtd, used on Kuroboxes based on PowerPC). I am also a Debian Maintainer and I like my work being part of Ubuntu.

One of the packages that I develop is related to the Freedom of our systems, vrms (Virtual Richard M. Stallman), which was actually used by some Ubuntu Developers in the "vrms meme" that spread through the Planet Ubuntu blog aggregator. I am very happy for that. The package is maintained in Debian's Alioth repository at http://alioth.debian.org/projects/vrms .

I live in São Paulo, Brazil and am mostly interested in Theoretical Computer Science, while still having a strong desire to make software leaner for the vast amount of CPU-starved boxes that we have here.

I can't stand software bloat and this is one of the reasons why I use a minimal system myself, with utilities like usbmount to automount removable media without depending on subsystems like HAL.

Regarding my formal studies, I am a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science and a Master of Science in Computer Science (having written my thesis on the subject of Bioinformatics, available at http://www.ime.usp.br/~rbrito/docs/).

During my undergraduate studies, I was engaged in an extra-curricular program to study Information Theory and Data Compression.

I am a true believer in Free Software and I am growing tired of having software that can't run on the very same machines that I used to type my texts some years ago (and they are in a perfectly fine state).

I also am attracted by multimedia (I have contributed "facelifts" to packages like the Theora encoder, and some of those are already integrated in Debian---and soon in Ubuntu). This is connected to the "Information Theory" part of my personal interests. I also contributed some code to both xine and mplayer, to have it work well in big-endian (PPC) architectures.
