GNUMedia Mission Statement
GNUmedia Society promotes the importance of universal access to information and technology, multimedia liberation, culture sharing and community oriented media production methods.
Additional Information
It is the aim of GNU Media to promote media production methods which not only allow but encourage sharing and active participation in the creative/technical process.
The GNU/Linux movement and Free Software Foundation have set a solid precedent for the production, distribution and modification of publicly accessible software.
GNUmedia Society believes that free multimedia is a matter of the individuals' freedom to play/preform, copy, distribute, study, change and improve the Media. More precisely, it refers to three kinds of freedom for the users of the multimedia:
* Universal access to media and mass communications infrastructure as well as multimedia source files.
* The freedom to copy, preform, display and redistribute media; for any purpose and with any device.
* The freedom to create, preform, display, release and distribute derivative works of said media.
Together we can explore the process of creating, critiquing, enjoying, liberating, modifying, promoting and sharing POSITIVE [or pertinent] community oriented multimedia.
Goals
* Organize computer and media training content and contribute to wiki based content already in existence [e.g. wikiversity]
* Help students realize their potential in using Free/Libre Open Source Software in both their studies and into their careers.
* Collect archival multimedia on a local level for future persons to utilize in understanding their community and heritage.
* Assist individuals in gaining access to technologies [e.g. PCs, Software or the Internet] and offer instruction on using the technologies.
* Equip teams to carry out instruction, raise public awareness about copyleft media and document their surroundings efficiently and legally.
We are discussing how to implement various projects including:
* GNU/Linux - Medios Libre OS
* Cooperative Office and Multimedia Production Studios
* Distributed, copyleft, multimedia distribution and mirroring network infrastructure.
We are implementing and organizing learning resources related to extending the GNU GPL ideals into the multimedia and communications infrastructure realm. It is desirable to guide users along the path of multimedia creation using Copyleft tools and to glue various disparate aspects of multimedia creation and distribution into a logical workflow. The user is free to decide which path(s) to take along with which license to release their creation under and hopefully will choose to contribute in a GPL harmonious means.

Several sub-projects are envisioned such as MediaProxy, which aims to assist users in cross-posting multimedia assets to Copyleft friendly multimedia communities such as iArchive. The interface for MediaProxy should be drag-and-drop simple. Ruby based web-frameworks are currently under consideration although it is desirable for most of the load to be carried by the end-user machine.
